Colourflage Rolling Pin Paintings
acrylic paint, A3 (297mm x 420mm) Birch wood canvas

An attempt to hide colour by using all colours. Rolled from the edge to the centre, colours have been layered and sequenced to arrive at the murky overlap and juxtaposition of colour. Original pigments exist in counter shapes sanwiched between the overlaps of subsequent layers. The rolling pin is used to push these pigments into position, only the starting point is predictable, the forms that emerge are unknown until rolled. Each roll adds complexity to a colour composition that requires subsequent colours to be rolled to find a composition that holds itself tight between the four sides of the canvas. Like the meniscus on the surface of water, this subtle tension suspends, and bounces back the gaze of the viewer.
