Respond Paintings

The surface of a pond finds its level. Yet when we look at it we can see beyond the surface, sometimes to the murky depths, we can also see the reflection of the sky above, infinity. Both suspended on the meniscus tension of the water’s surface. This one plane has an infinite depth suspended in a flat skin. My paintings are built with this idea in mind. Not to represent this, but to reveal flatness through depth.

I imagine the form of the paint in the tube, then allow the colour to be free from constraints and help it find its own shape by rolling and squashing paint flat. The substrate that holds the paint is equal to the paint. The materiality of the painting breaks the illusion of a subject. Like a magic trick when the magician shows how it’s done. Colours are used to allow forms to be differentiated from each other, like the colour section dividers in a Filofax.

The paint and substrates are held by bespoke frames originally made to frame somebody else’s work. In this instance the frame is the starting point, the dimensions, material and colour informed by unknown work that was ultimately not framed. They were not made thinking of this work, but of another. The frame surrounds, supports and becomes one with the material it displays.

All works are shown proportional scale to each other, and are available to buy. Each unique, sealed, and signed on the reverse. The price assigned to each work was done intuitively, using art logic and poetic rhyme.

Due to the fragile nature, these works can not be sent in the post. If you are not able to collect the work in person I can explore creative options of how the work can be united with you.
