Why did I make this?

To allow radical unabridged freedom of expression and creativity to flourish. I relay as much as possible on standards, archetypes, givens, fixed rules, mathematical and scientific logic. My ultimate goal is to reduce the subjective, and uncover or invent a universal truth. This is often a futile endeavour when attempting to make art. The daily conundrums that often require subjective sensibilities of ‘taste’ or ‘personal preference’ drive me mad. Over the years I have evolved strategies that enable me to bypass the plethora of smaller decisions such as choosing a colour, selecting a typeface, positioning an element on the page etc., all essential, but consequential to the larger concept at play.

So following this path of givens, I developed this solution to calculate the size of frame/boarder to surround any work on a rectangle (all squares are rectangles, not all rectangles are squares). Useful when a drawing, painting, photograph etc. requires ‘breathing’ space around its perimeter, rather than relying on the edge of the page. The logic is simple and pure, and hopefully will be accepted as a universal standard like the Golden Section or Fibonacci sequence.
