Footnote: I first made Felt-Tip Prints ‘officially’ when I was a student at the Royal College of Art in 1998. I was subverting the marker pens my Dad used in his design studio that I encountered in the 1980’s. I always loved the consequential marks that his ‘Magic Markers’ made on the sheets of paper that sat below the page he was working on. The areas he lingered the longest the bolder the mark. So frustrated that my drawing and illustration abilities did not allow me to make the marker renderings I desired, I embraced my frustration, and literally removed my hand from the process and let the pen make the work. 30 years later, I am still exploring the same process and materials. I enjoy its connection to graphic design from days gone. Even though the ‘Magic Markers’ of the 1980’s are no more, the Winsor & Newton Promarkers still have ‘magic’ within when used like wands. I love the colours and forms these pen create, almost on their own, abracadabra…
